Career
Shawn was inclined towards sports since his teenage. He used to play soccer and cricket in his teens. In 1990, he shifted to the US from Jamaica where he developed an interest in bodybuilding. When he was 17 years old, he started working out in the gym to gain the required body strength and body size for bodybuilding. During the initial years of his bodybuilding, he got severe injuries and took a break from bodybuilding for a small period of time.

He was then encouraged by Mr. Universe Yohhnie Shambouger to continue his training and participate in bodybuilding competitions. After a severe injury in his right hand in 1993, his doctors advised him to quit bodybuilding. He continued his training and won many bodybuilding competitions. Later, he won Posers Award for his stage performance. Due to some personal and professional setbacks, he once became an alcoholic. In 2010, he made a comeback in bodybuilding and won the IFBB Pro card. He participated in various seasons of Mr. Olympia contest, and in 2018, he won the title for the first time.
Controversy
He landed into a huge controversy in October 2018, when he was accused of sexually assaulting a woman in Salt Lake City, Utah. In July 2019, he was banned from participating in Mr. Olympia contest 2019 as he was charged in rape, object rape, and sexual abuse case.
